Budding Up Wonderfruit

written by Thanita and Kanin Phuvanatnaranubala

Diverse music festivals are more rare in Thailand than an honest politician, so when Wonderfruit launched plans to spread its seeds in the fields of Siam Country Club, it quickly grew to be one of the most anticipated festivals here.

Wanna watch local and international acts live from the cutting edges of music? Marvel at marvellous art installations and architectures? Take a birds-eye-view joyride aboard ultralight airplanes? Exercise both mind and body with free running, life-cycling, belly-dancing or meditation? Combat climate change through talks and workshops by eco-experts while eating eco-conscious street food? Or just enjoy a weekend with your family? Whatever gets you going, Wonderfruit’s got you covered. And if you’re not already excitedly wheezing, here’s an intro to some of the diverse artists performing this February.

Liana La Havas

This songstress has graced the stages of Glastonbury and Bestival; her RnB-folk infusion, alongside her soulful voice, has earned her a Grammy nod for Best Urban Contemporary Album.

Rudimental

This award-winning drum and bass band from the UK, best known for their chart-topper “Feel the Love”, is a guaranteed stage-pumper – we’ll be “waiting all night” for them (geddit?)

Srirajah Rockers

Chill reggae beats, powerful vocals and positive vibes are combined in this local, award-winning reggae/dub heavyweight.

JUNUN

This collaborative lovechild by Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur, Radiohead’s guitarist Jonny Greenwood, and Indian ensemble Rajasthan Express combines traditional world music with contemporary sound.

Kate Simko & London Electric Orchestra

Unlikely fusion of orchestral and electronic founded by London-based electronic producer and film composer Kate Simko is ready to transport you to another dimension of music.

Young Fathers

This hip-hop/pop group from Scotland won the Mercury Prize for their 2014 debut album. As a veteran of live performances, they are sure to bring some gritty fun to the stage.

Wanting more? Look no further than Wonderfruit’s seven stages. Indie music fans can’t afford to missexperimental pop duo Buke and Gase, local rockers Yena, or rock-blues band Zero Hero. Luna City Express, Eric Volta, and Norma Jay are some of the many house/techno DJs ready to take dancing to the fields. Pop/RnB lovers can look forward to seeing singers Jess Connelly, Shura, and many more. But why read when music can do the talking? Here’s a playlist of mentioned artists and more to help you get ready for the wonder-vitamins overdosed, 16-19th February at Siam Country Club, Pattaya.
