Soulquarius: The R&B Jam You Have Been Waiting For

written by Mia Nissen

On February 18th, The Observatory Orange County will be hosting the inaugural year of Soulquarius, a star studded R&B festival, and to say I am completely freaking out about it is an understatement. Tears filled my eyes when I saw the lineup and reflected on singing along to Monica and Brandy’s “The Boy is Mine” as a 5 year old girl. Erykah Badu has been THE bad mama jama in the R&B game since before I was born, and getting the opportunity to see Miss. Baduizm herself sounds a lot like attending my own spiritual awakening. R Kelly will be leaving the closet to headline the festival as well, and whatever your opinion on the man may be,  it is fact that he can hit those notes like nobody else.

The list goes on and on with dope artists who have made waves and left their mark in the music world. A lineup this stellar just can’t be missed. And if you have a long time lover or a lil’ boo thang this event is the one to bring them along for. I get the vibe that grooving to Jhene Aiko, Pretty Ricky, and The Dream alone is not as enjoyable as doing it with the one you are feelin’ at the moment.

While this event has some serious heavy hitters, of course it can’t be expected to know every artist on the lineup. I did my research and let me tell you, Snoh Aalegra is hot, hot, hot. With a sound she dubs as “cinematic soul” her voice and lyrics are easy to connect with and truly take you on a journey. I predict that Miss Aalegra will provide a dreamy soundtrack to the setting California sun.

The artist who is originally from Sweden now resides in Los Angeles, and has been making music since age 14. Sno recently came out with an EP ‘Don’t Explain’ which I urge you to check out now. My favorite song would have to be Charleville 9200- it’s a track that gives you those first love butterflies and makes you feel as though her story was your own.

Don’t wait any longer to purchase that Soulquarius ticket! You do not want to miss this unbeatable day of rhythm and blues, and your chance to see so many legendary artists.
