EDM stands for Electronic Dance Music.
In today’s day and age, EDM has evolved drastically beyond the confines of it’s meaning on paper. Between subgenres, different music festivals, and what classifies a “dance hit”, the way consumers label electronic music varies.
Artists are no longer stuck in a pre-determined box. Regardless of the beat that leads the track, every song put out by an EDM artist is led by what inspires them. It’s led by emotion, creativity, and the desire to express themselves. Kygo and Thomas Jack have coined the term “Tropical House” just like ODESZA has developed a live experience that feels more like a cinematic journey than a basic DJ set.
Illenium is no different. Nick Miller, who goes by his stage name “Illenium”, was born in Chicago but grew up in San Francisco. After seeing Bassnectar at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, he developed a passion for creating music. He credits this show as the springboard to what has now become an extremely successful career as a mainstream EDM artist.
The way his album, ‘Awake’, makes you feel doesn’t mirror that of other artists in his genre like Tiesto and Steve Aoki. His tracks are often accompanied by the sounds of instruments, slow or speedy. There’s no doubt that Illenium writes lyrics from the heart, as his recent release “Take You Down” honors his own personal story of overdosing on heroin just six years ago. The beauty that pours from his tracks needs no explaining.
