Did you know that one of the oldest running festivals in the world is also one of the most sustainable? Mysteryland returns to the Netherlands this August for its massive 26th edition boasting a strong international lineup with names such as Axwell /\ Ingrosso, Hardwell, and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike scheduled to appear. Along with over two decades of experience under their belt, they’ve also earned the title as one of the most sustainable festivals in the world. Here are five ways this festival has helped sustain the environment.
1. FREE WATER PROGRAM
Dutch tap water is not only drinkable but delicious, and the festival offers it freely throughout the entire event! Mysteryland has popup water bars left, right, and center, allowing festival-goers to fill up their own water bottles or hydration packs. You can even purchase limited edition water bags which conveniently hook onto your belt or bag and can be easily refilled! This is a great way to not only save a lot of plastic but will also save you a lot of money at the bar!
2. VOLUNTEER WORK
Each year, Mysteryland teams up with the non-profit organisation 10,000 HOURS to encourage dance lovers to do more volunteer work within the community. Other festivals, volunteers, and even DJs come together to support this foundation and the various projects they carry out to help the most vulnerable members of society. Mysteryland just goes to show that together we really can make a difference!
3. SAVING ENERGY
Mysteryland operates with a strict energy policy. All crew members are trained to ensure that everything is operated at the most efficient and energy-saving level. The festival has even won awards for the highest reduction in energy consumption of all European festivals!
4. PLASTIC RECYCLE PROGRAM
The festival only uses one type of plastic throughout the entire terrain, making the recycling process quick and efficient. All of the plastic that’s used at Mysteryland is immediately recycled afterward, making the festival more sustainable.
5. LEAVE NO TRACE
You may have heard of this concept at other big events such as Burning Man. The concept is to leave the land exactly the way you found it. Mysteryland has mastered the art of leaving the terrain almost untouched, ensuring that every single cup and cigarette butt is collected from the grounds after the festival.
